Headache & Migraine Treatment Q & A

What are the Different Types of Headaches?

Headaches are classified as primary or secondary. Primary headaches are caused by a problem associated with your head and neck. A secondary headache occurs due to an underlying health condition such as a concussion or allergies.

The type of pain, where it’s felt, and the severity of your symptoms depend on the headache. In tension headaches, which are the most common type of primary headache, you typically have dull pain and a feeling of pressure.

By comparison, cluster headaches cause intense pain around one eye, while migraines are known for severe pain and other body-wide symptoms.

What Symptoms Will I Develop With a Migraine?

Some patients develop symptoms called aura about 30 minutes before their migraine starts. Aura often affects your vision, making you see zigzag lines or stars, or creating a temporary blind spot.

Migraines can last from four hours to three days if they’re not treated. During that time, you’ll have symptoms such as:

  • Intense pain, often around the temples
  • Pain that worsens when you move
  • Sensitivity to light, sounds, smell, and touch
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness

Even after your migraine pain is gone, you may continue to feel confused, dizzy, or sleepy.

How are Headaches and Migraines Treated?

The team at Peak Medical specializes in a wide range of alternative therapies that provide immediate relief from headaches and migraines. Your customized treatment plan may include one or more of these treatment options:

  • SphenoCath®: The SphenoCath delivers pain-relieving anesthesia to a group of nerves called the sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG). During headaches and migraines, the SPG delivers the pain messages responsible for you feeling the pain. When this nerve is temporarily blocked with an anesthetic, you get immediate headache relief.
  • Chiropractic Care: Manual spinal manipulation is especially beneficial for relieving migraines and tension headaches with neck pain.
  • Acupuncture: Inserting needles at specific acupuncture points triggers your brain to release endorphins, your body’s natural pain relievers.
  • Physical Therapy: When you have a secondary headache due to an injury, physical therapy restores normal function, which also relieves the associated headache.
  • Deep Tissue Class IV Laser: This low-level laser treatment reduces inflammation, relieves pain, increases circulation, and promotes healing.
  • Spinal Decompression: When a problem with nerves in your spine cause your headache, nonsurgical decompression gently stretches the spine, removes pressure from the nerves, and relieves your pain.
