Botox & Dysport Q & A

Peak Medical

What are Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are both made from highly purified botulinum toxin, but each has a slightly different formulation. When they’re injected into a muscle, they block the nerve signals that make the muscle contract. As a result, the muscle relaxes and the wrinkle it caused is smoothed away. In some cases, the targeted wrinkle completely disappears until the injection wears off.

What Types of Wrinkles are Treated with Botox and Dysport?

Over the years, you develop two types of wrinkles. Static wrinkles are caused by the normal changes that occur as you get older, such as thinning skin, dehydration, loss of collagen, and sun damage.

Dynamic wrinkles are different because they’re primarily caused by repetitive muscle movements that occur when you make certain facial expressions. Since Botox and Dysport target muscles, they effectively treat moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles.

Dysport is specially designed to eliminate frown lines between your eyebrows (called glabellar lines). However, at your doctor’s discretion, it may also be used to treat the same wrinkles as Botox.

Botox diminishes wrinkles such as:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Bunny lines on the upper nose

Botox can also relax wrinkles and vertical bands that develop on your neck.

Will Botox or Dysport Affect My Natural Facial Expressions?

Absolutely not. Your doctor at Peak Medical precisely targets a few small areas in the specific muscles that are responsible for causing your wrinkles. This leaves most of your facial muscles free to move, so your face continues to be expressive and you maintain a natural appearance.

What Should I Expect During a Botox or Dysport Procedure?

After applying a topical anesthetic, your doctor needs only about 15 minutes to inject Botox or Dysport. Afterward, the injection sites may be slightly red or swollen, but that won’t last long and you can cover them with makeup. You’ll need to wait a few hours before engaging in strenuous activities; otherwise, you don’t need any downtime.

When Will I See Results?

For both products, you’ll see the full result in 24-48 hours, as the medication takes effect.* Your results last up to four months and after the effect starts to fade, you can get another round of injections. In fact, the results often last longer in future injections.
