What are Allergies?

Allergies are a chronic health condition that develops when your immune system mistakenly interprets a typically benign substance (an allergen) as a threat and triggers an inflammatory response to fight off the perceived threat. Some common allergens include dust, pollen, certain foods like peanuts and shellfish, and drugs.

An allergic reaction can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Nasal congestion, runny nose, or sneezing
  • Shortness of breath or wheezing
  • Rash
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fever

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction. You experience several allergic symptoms, and your blood pressure drops to dangerous levels. If you or someone near you experiences anaphylaxis, call 911 immediately.

What is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing is the process of identifying the specific allergen that triggers your allergic reactions. Peak Medical screens for over 80 different allergens during allergy testing. Your analysis may include skin tests where a small, diluted amount of an allergen is applied to your skin and monitored for a reaction. You may also take small amounts of suspected allergens by mouth to check for food sensitivities.

Once your provider identifies your specific allergy, they can create a customized treatment plan to help you control your allergies and lead a healthy, active life. Allergy treatment plans often include avoidance strategies, medications to manage your symptoms, and immunotherapy.

What is Immunotherapy?

Immunotherapy is an innovative approach to allergy treatment. During immunotherapy, you’re exposed to controlled doses of the allergen that triggers your reactions. The allergen is usually provided via injection.

The amount of allergen included in the injections is too minute to stimulate your immune system. However, over time, your body begins to develop a tolerance for the allergen, and your allergies begin to subside.

Peak Medical provides immunotherapy in two phases: buildup and maintenance. During your buildup phase, you receive immunotherapy injections once or twice a week. Each injection slightly increases the amount of the allergen. The buildup phase usually lasts 3-6 months.

When you reach your effective dose, you begin your maintenance phase. During your maintenance phase, you receive injections once every 2-4 weeks to help your body maintain its tolerance to the allergen.

If you suffer from allergies, call Peak Medical or make an appointment online today to discover if allergy testing and immunotherapy can reduce your symptoms and improve your wellness.
