Nerve Testing for Diagnosing Treatment of Chronic Pain
Nerve testing is used as a detection tool for locating and diagnosing nerve injuries or disorders. Nerve testing may be performed by our medical professionals for a number of reasons that can lead to the development of a comprehensive plan to treat chronic pain. Our doctors will determine if nerve testing is right for your specific case.
What to Expect During Nerve Testing
Nerve testing consists of two different tests:
- Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV): An NCV test times how quickly weak electrical pulses are able to move through the nerves. Patches will be placed directly on the skin in varying locations for this procedure. The patches will be used to stimulate the nerves with a mild electrical pulse. As the test is being performed, your nerve responses will be recorded.
- Electromyogram (EMG): An EMG is used to determine the electrical activity of muscles while they are moving and while they are still. The EMG procedure will be performed after, or possibly during, the NCV test. For this procedure, electrode needles are placed into the skin and you will be asked to tighten or rest your muscles accordingly as the recording machine takes note of the results.
Nerve testing is a minimally invasive procedure, although it is crucial to follow specific instructions provided by your healthcare professional prior to the procedure to ensure that results are accurate. If you will be receiving both the NCV and EMG tests, your healthcare professional will begin with the NCV procedure.
Benefits of Nerve Testing
Nerve testing is highly beneficial to those who are experiencing chronic pain or may be suffering from a nerve disorder. By undergoing nerve testing, our doctors are able to more adequately determine the location and severity of your condition. This important step ensures that the treatment plan is catered specifically to your individual needs to maximize the results.
