Allergy Testing with Immunotherapy
At Peak Medical, our doctors use allergy testing and immunotherapy to minimize allergy-related symptoms. We start by conducting a series of diagnostic tests to determine which substances you are allergic to. The most common of these tests is the skin scratch test. During the skin scratch test, one of our medical professionals will prick your skin with a series of different common allergens and gauge the level of reaction your skin has to the substance. This can also help to determine the severity of the allergy.
Once the doctor identifies the allergy, you can go through immunotherapy. Immunotherapy uses allergy shots that gradually expose your bloodstream to the allergen in order for you to build up an immunity to it, thus “immunotherapy”. For patients who do not want shots, we offer an additional allergy treatment option that includes drops.
What to Expect During Immunotherapy and Allergy Testing
During the first appointment, the doctor will conduct testing to determine what your allergens are and the severity of the reactions. Peak Medical conducts over 80 different kinds of antigen including grass, trees, cats and dogs. After we identify your allergies, the doctor will make recommendations for a customized treatment plan specifically designed for you. The doctor will then have you back in for a series of sessions in which they will perform the immunotherapy treatment. This can be in the form of injections or drops under the tongue. The necessary treatment time varies for each patient based on their individual health condition.
Benefits & of Allergy Testing and Immunotherapy
There are two phases to allergy shots and they include:
- Build-up Phase: During the build-up phase, our patients receive injections with an increasing amount of the allergens approximately one to two times per week. The length of time for this phase in generally 3-6 months.
- Maintenance Phase: The maintenance phase begins when the effective dose is reached. Dependent upon the level of allergen sensitivity and patient response, there will be a range of two to four weeks between treatments during this phase. The medical professionals at our facility will recommend what range is best for each patient.
